Everywhere you look there seems to be an adult coloring book. They’ve been on the top of Amazon bestseller lists, in grocery store checkouts, and they’re even popping up in craft stores.

What makes these coloring books so special? Here are just a few things you need to know about adult coloring books.

1. They’re Not for Kids

Adult coloring books aren’t your child’s coloring books. These books are much more detailed and require a great amount of focus. It’s not uncommon to spend hours, days, or even weeks coloring in just one page. In other words, buying these for your young children may result in them being frustrated. You also need to realize that some adult coloring books do contain adult material, such as curse words.

2. There’s Something for Everyone

It doesn’t matter what you love, there’s a good chance you’ll find it in an adult coloring book. Whether you love Game of Thrones or paisley prints, you’ll find a coloring book you just have to have. You’ll also find books that are much more detailed than others. It all depends on how much time and focus you want to spend.

3. They Can Be Good for Your Brain

Believe it or not, adult coloring books can actually be a boost for your brain. This is due to the amount of focus required to color in the detailed pages. It’s a great exercise and one that’s even being recommended to patients with dementia. If you want to keep your brain sharp, buy some coloring books.

4. They’re a Great Way to Unwind

The amount of focus required for these coloring books not only boosts your brain but relaxes you. When you focus on what colors you want to use, doing shading techniques, etc you’re able to stop thinking about the bills that are due or the upcoming meeting with your boss. If you need a way to unwind, this is one of the best ways to do it.

5. Colored Pencils and Fine-Tipped Markers Work Best

As mentioned above, these aren’t your child’s coloring books. Adult coloring books require colored pencilscolored pens, or fine-tipped markers for the best results. While you could color with crayons, you won’t be able to fill in the tiny spaces. If you’re coloring a page that is double-sided, stick with colored pencils.

6. They Make Great, Inexpensive Artwork

Last, but not least, the completed pages from many of these coloring books may be excellent artwork. All you need is a frame (Dollar Tree has some nice ones!). If you want to make it look even better, add a mat. If you’re going to use your pages as artwork, choose books that have one-sided pages.

Adult coloring books are taking the world by storm and with good reason. Not only do they boost the brain and relax you, but they’re fun. If you haven’t tried one, you’re really missing out.
